Frequently Asked questions
-
Can ketamine infusions be scary?
Some patients worry about having a “bad trip,” but this experience is uncommon and usually linked to anxiety, fear, or external stress going into the infusion. Preparing with a calm, positive mindset can make a big difference. If you begin to feel uncomfortable at any point, our team can adjust your environment, talk you through what you’re experiencing, or administer medication to help you relax. Every infusion is different, and having one unpleasant session does not mean future infusions will feel the same. After your session is booked, you will receive an email of tips and pearls prior to your infusion to ensure positivity going into your session.

How do I know if I am a candidate for ketamine therapy?
Our clinic focuses on ketamine infusions for mood and pain disorders. You can call our office for a free five-minute evaluation to get an initial idea of whether you may be a good fit before scheduling a full consultation with a provider.
-
How is ketamine different from antidepressants?
Traditional antidepressants such as SSRIs work by increasing serotonin activity to help stabilize mood over time. Ketamine works differently. It targets glutamate pathways and helps repair stress-related changes in the brain caused by long periods of depression. This process can support faster improvements in neuroplasticity and mood regulation compared to standard antidepressants.

Therapy and Ketamine Treatment
Even if therapy has not been helpful in the past, many patients find it more effective once they begin ketamine treatment. Ketamine can make emotional processing easier, which may allow therapy to work better. Integration is an important part of the process and involves reflecting on your infusion experiences and applying insights to daily life. This can be done with a trained therapist, an integration specialist, or a structured integration group and we can refer patients to different therapists. It’s known as ketamine assisted psychotherapy (KAP).
-
How quickly will I notice improvement?
Improvements do not happen overnight. Some people feel lighter or less burdened the day of their infusion and then feel a temporary dip the next day. This is normal. Ketamine works by resetting receptors in the brain, and that process takes time. Many patients begin to notice more consistent changes within one to two weeks. Every person responds differently, so your experience may vary.
-
Is it safe?
Ketamine has been used safely in medical settings for decades. When administered at low doses for mental health, side effects are typically mild and temporary, such as grogginess, nausea, or dizziness. You will be monitored throughout your infusion by trained professionals to ensure your comfort and safety.
-
Will insurance cover it?
Prime Youth Aesthetics and Wellness does not accept insurance for ketamine therapy. We do accept HSA and FSA cards. At your appointment, we can provide a superbill, which is an itemized receipt that you can submit to your insurance company to see if they will reimburse you directly. Coverage varies depending on the plan.
-
Can I drive afterward?
You cannot drive after your infusion. You must have a trusted family member or friend pick you up and drive you home. We do not allow rideshare services such as Uber or Lyft for safety reasons.
-
How do I prepare?
- In the days leading up to your infusion, try to limit exposure to negative or stressful media and environments. Come with a calm mindset and feel free to bring items that help you feel comfortable, such as a blanket, or something grounding.
- We will offer you a snack and oral fluids prior to leaving. We will also assist you to the restroom.
