Hormone Metabolism

Why It’s Way More Complex Than You Think

Today, I want to dive into something that doesn’t get talked about enough: the metabolism of hormones—and why understanding it is just as important as taking the hormones themselves.

So, I recently had the opportunity to attend a dinner hosted by a company called DUTCH. No, not the language! DUTCH stands for Dried Urine Testing for Comprehensive Hormones. And let me tell you, it’s a game changer.

What Is the DUTCH Test?

The DUTCH test is a simple urine test that patients can do from the comfort of their home. It gives us a deep look at how your body is processing key hormones—like testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone (if you’re on it).

But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: hormone metabolism is not just about how much hormone you have. It’s about how your body breaks those hormones down into metabolites—which are the final, usable (or sometimes unusable) forms of those hormones.

Supplements That Support Metabolism

If your results show imbalances, we may suggest:

  • DIM – A well-known supplement that helps support estrogen metabolism, especially helpful if you're producing too much of the "bad" kind.
  • Methyl Factors – These are nutrients that support methylation, a critical process your body uses to safely break down and eliminate hormones.

And let’s be honest—most people don’t even know what methylation is, but it’s vital for hormone health. Taking hormones without supporting metabolism is like watering plants without checking the soil. You’re missing the full picture..

Why This Matters

Taking hormones is just one piece of the puzzle. If you’re investing in your health—time, money, effort—you deserve to know if your body is actually benefiting from the treatment.

That’s why I’m personally trying the DUTCH test myself. I want to see how my body is metabolizing hormones too!

Let Go of the Timeline

I always try to have an honest, heart-to-heart with patients about this. So many people come in with a date in mind—maybe for a wedding, a vacation, or a high school reunion. And while it’s great to have goals, pinning your success to a specific number by a specific date is often a recipe for disappointment.

Instead, what if you just felt it out? Go into this journey with an open mind. Be patient with your body. Ride it out. Don’t rush it. Weight loss drugs can be an incredible tool, but they’re not magic—and they’re not for everyone. You’ve got to give it time. Give it at least six months before deciding if it’s right for you.

Curious About Your Hormone Metabolism?

If you’re currently on hormones—or thinking about it—and want to make sure your body is processing them in a healthy, effective way, the DUTCH test is a fantastic tool.
